Objective of the Project

The National Information and Consulting Centre for Culture (NIPOS) has been the principal agent of a number of major Projects. One of the means of development is the system of so called progression shows culminating in nationwide festivals. In the field of puppet theatre, such a showcase event is ‘Puppeteers in Chrudim’, one of the oldest puppet festivals in the world. It has come to be the meeting place of puppeteers, where different approaches and methods can face-off, as well as a vantage point for puppeteers to broaden their knowledge. Regular invitees include professional puppetry ensembles, to enhance the supplementary programme, and professional puppeteers, to lead workshops and seminars. ‘Puppeteers in Chrudim’ is conceived much like a laboratory, from which both amateur and professional artists can draw inspiration. The present Project will be an enrichment of puppet theatre, bringing the opportunity for Czech and foreign artists to meet over a multicultural project, whilst the presentation of its outputs at festivals in the Czech Republic and Norway can appeal to both adult and child audiences, bringing specific benefits to each. The Project will link four professional theatre bodies, from the Czech Republic (“Divadlo ANPU”, “Buchty a loutky”), Norway (“Teater Innlandet”) and Iceland (Bernd Ogrodnik). These bodies will work with the Norwegian folk-tale ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ (recorded by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe), at four levels. At the first level we have an international dramatization, resulting in a new production. The folk-tale will be staged in Prague by the ANPU Theatre creative team (directed by B. Schenková, dramaturgy by Z. Vojtíšková, scenography by B. Zichová, music by J. Štromská), jointly with Norwegian artists from the Teater Innlandet. The production will be presented to both Czech and Norwegian audiences. In the Czech Republic it will take place in at least three places (in Liberec, as part of the European Regional Theatre festival in Hradec Králové and at ‘Puppeteers in Chrudim’). It will then move to Norway, where it will be part of the repertoire of Teater Innlandet, and will be presented to the audiences in the Hedmark and Oppland regions. At the second Project level we have the newly created production juxtaposing its artistic puppet theatre approaches against the production of the same title staged in the same period by the theatrical ensemble “Buchty a loutky” (‘Cakes and Puppets’). The third Project level connects to the long-term work of NIPOS, in researching the child viewer. A ‘Puppeteers in Chrudim’ there will be a survey to gauge the reactions of child audiences, comparing their perceptions of both of the above mentioned performances. The survey will include drama training methods and approaches, which will become a new impetus in the examination of child audience reactions. The fourth Project level will contribute to establishing a greater diversity of approaches to puppet theatre. With this in mind, under the ‘Puppeteers in Chrudim’ festival there will be a six-day workshop around the same story.
