Project description:

The awareness campaign will inform the public about the term obstetric violence, its prevention and options for addressing it. It will take establish common principles of midwifery care and the definition of care to prevent and address obstetric violence. The project will also map the needs of women (overlapping with the needs of migrant women).

Obstetric violence is an invisible form of midwifery violence that not only impacts directly on women and their children but also indirectly affects the functioning of the entire family and society. The system of care for women's reproductive health places a strong emphasis on medical settings and procedures, neglecting the individual needs of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, and thus contributes to this form of violence. Obstetric violence is defined as gender-based violence in the European Parliament Resolution of 24 June 2021 on the state of sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU in the field of maternity care.

The project responds to the increasing interest of women in the continuous care of midwives that brings expertise to the care of pregnant women while providing an individual, safe and respectful approach. According to research, continuous care by midwives for a healthy woman and her baby is safe and effective. Making the care of midwives more accessible with an emphasis on continuity of care is one of the new program goals of the Government of the Czech Republic.

The project will be launched with stakeholder mapping and the creation of a Midwifery Alliance, bringing together organisations, institutions and supporters of midwifery. An analysis will be made of existing principles and practices of care at the national and international levels.

The project enables awareness-raising activities also towards maternity hospitals and other health facilities. The promoter will operate telephone and online midwives' counselling service I Give Birth in Peace, where it will respond to women's individual requests.
A database of frequently asked questions and a database of therapeutic assistance in different languages will be created. In partnership with the Association for Midwifery Homes and Centres, the midwives and students of midwifery and other professionals will be trained so that they are able to provide respectful, safe and highly individualized care.
