Objective of the Project

In 2015, the Festival intends to import and introduce the „Brim“, the performance of the acclaimed Icelandic company Vesturport. The exclusive opportunity to see the Nordic theatre on the scene of the Festival is underlined uniqueness of the year 2015 for the city of Pilsen, which announced the European Capital of Culture for this year.

Icelandic and Nordic theatre culture in general is not sufficiently known in the Czech Republic, because the Nordic theatre groups do not regularly attend Czech scenes. This absence is mainly due to the high cost of importing such a performance. Each opportunity to import the production is a kind of unique and exclusive occasion, which offers not only an unusual viewing experience but also the inspiration for the Czech theatre professionals.

We will organize a discussion of artistic creators and actors with the audience and also a meeting of Czech and foreign experts on the issue, during thee of the staging of the Icelandic group Vesturport. The discussion will reflect both the staging of the theatre Vesturport and Nordic tradition and present in general. We also prepare projections of the Vesturport’s films (Brim performance has also film version) in cooperation with the Pilsner Film Club. The involvement of the project in the overall conception of the Festival ensures synergy in the distribution of costs for the implementation of the group’s hosting.

The project "Brim" will benefit from joint promotion, guestservice, joint production and the participation of foreign guests. The Festival covers all these costs from other sources and thus not burden the budget of this project. During its twenty two-year tradition, the International Festival Theatre in Pilsen has become renowned as an important theatre festival in Central Europe and has developed in an encounter platform for theatre professionals and artists from both European as well as other countries. The festival has built its respect and is very well received, which proves not only the every year rising number of international participants and shows, but also the Visegrad Award for the best cultural project which the festival received in 2008. At this festival there has been presented 150 theatre companies by now from 20 countries from all around the world.

The Festival is very well received in the Czech as well as in the international press. For several times it happened to be a meeting point of well-known and honourable men (most notably it was attended by Ronald Harwood, Vaclav Havel, Arthur Miller and Tom Stopard in cooperation with PEN Club conference).

In 2008 the festival has been chosen by the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC) to organize a conference 20 Years After – the metamorphosis of theatre and its reflection after 1989, which was very successful.
