Objective of the Project

The project will be implemented within two sub-areas: A) Creating a training program for the study of manifestations of the response of trees to climate changes. The project will focus on the creation of training programs. For their implementation a series of three education objects within extreme climatic conditions in the Czech Republic will be created (Hrubý Jesenik, Pouzdřanská step, open garden in the city centre of Brno), where the most radical changes related to climate changes can be expected. State of the art instruments for measuring growth and physiological processes of trees (transpiration, radial increment, roots, phenological manifestations, climate sensors, soil sensors) will be installed within the objects. The measured values will be processed and interpreted in the environmental education in accordance with the reached level of education of trainees. Educational programs will be created for individual levels of education including worksheets, in which trainees will themselves process and evaluate measured data. For this purpose, a web application will be created, on which the on-line measured variables will be displayed and simultaneously it will contain a database of measured data. Persons will be trained in a number of different levels: The primary and secondary school, high schools and colleges and universities, professionals (teachers, environmental centres, government, commercial sphere - arborists, gardeners ...). Within the project, the training in the installation and maintenance of the measuring equipment will also be implemented. The trained persons will be able to work independently with these devices and will be able to use these skills in their professional activities. For this purpose a series of mobile sensors will be used for measuring climatic and physiological variables. B) Creating a training program for the study of the effectiveness of ecological construction with regard to carbon balance in the conditions of the changing climate. For the above sub-area of the project the unique infrastructure, which was built by the Partnership Foundation located within the premises of Údolní 33, Brno, will be used. It is a complex of buildings and an educational garden, which serve as a model example for the environmentally friendly construction in the context of sustainable development of the city leading to measures focused on climate changes mitigation and adaptation to these changes. The area of the Open garden is directed towards the long-term carbon neutral balance. Minimizing energy losses is provided by the passive energy standard and the required additional energy is provided to the premise largely from renewable sources. Two buildings with different structural and technical characteristics are crucial for the project design (a historic building renovated to the passive energy standard and the new building built in accordance with the passive standard). Both buildings are comparable in terms of floor space (1,000 square meters). A unique opportunity to assess the effectiveness of adaptation measures is provided by the comparison of rainwater runoff from the green roof of the new building with the same size standard flat roof of the adjacent renovated building. Both downpipes are connected and discharge to the underground tank of 30 m2, from which water is pumped for flushing and garden irrigation. In the above buildings the latest measuring equipment with the on-line transmission of data that will be used for training in efficiency of the environmentally friendly buildings will be installed. Data will be made available to the public via software enabling monitoring both immediate balance of water and energy in buildings, and their cumulative values for individual days, weeks, months and years. As part of the training, trainees will be informed of usability and environmentally friendly buildings and will also be taught in the area of evaluation and interpretation of data from the measuring devices. The education program will also include students of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs, who will take use of the potential of this project for applied research and will process the given topic as a part of their theses. The educational program will be implemented at various levels of education: Primary and secondary schools, high schools, universities and colleges, professionals, lay people interested in eco-building and energy savings.
