Objective of the Project

From the viewpoint of cultural value and landscape architecture Pruhonice Park is a global rarity. It was confirmed at the 34th UNESCO session in Brazil (2010) that the National cultural monument “Pruhonice Park and Chateau” was considered part of world heritage and of the inscribed Historic Centre of Prague (1992). The unique character of the park (almost 50 hectares) as an extraordinary example of garden architecture of the 19th century is a Czech contribution to the world's cultural and natural heritage. The unique harmony of cultural and natural values of the park landscape in Botič creek valley is based on the lifelong work of one author - count Ernst Emanuel von Silva-Tarouca. The park hosts major collection of plants, and apart from aesthetic there is also a considerable scientific value. Together with the original domestic woods there are numerous foreign plants – total 1,500 woody and 600 perennials. The proprietor and manager of Pruhonice Park is The Institute of Botany of the ASCR, v.v.i. – submitter of the project. Subject matter of the project is renovation of Castle Alpin Rock Garden – major phenomenon in Pruhonice Park. It is a significant composition element, and at the same time important plant collection. The Alpine Rock Garden is located on the slopes over the Chateau pond. This section of the Park is currently not open to the public. From the landscape cultivation point of view it is in disrepair - the original collections of alpine and perennial plants are in poor conditions, and some species are missing completely. Renovation of the Alpine Garden includes renewal of the globally unique monument by re-introducing the original alpine and perennial species on the basis of archived documents, renewal of the “Princess’s rose garden” on the upper terrace with both original and contemporary assortment of roses, renewal of the original spring and Pruhonice Chateau vista. Technologies for the purposes of educational programme linked to the Alpine Garden will be implemented. Promotional activities will include information leaflet, map and grand opening. Project implementation will result in revival of this section of Pruhonice Park, and its opening for general public by creation of a separate tour for visitors. Norwegian partner “UiT The Arctic university of Norway, Tromso University Museum" is involved in the project, as it manages its own Arctic-alpine Botanic Garden; the cooperation is a long-term one. The partner’s participation is in the field of plant assortments, genetic fund collection, educational system in the form of study trips and consultations.
